China’s first SQA Electronic Engineering Program launched in IC, XMU

July 2, 2026

Xiamen University(XMU) has been authorized by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to offer the first SQA-AD (Higher National Diploma) program in Electronic Engineering in China. This milestone marks a significant expansion of the International College’s SQA offerings beyond traditional business and computer science disciplines, opening new international pathways for students pursuing careers in electronic engineering.

Program Overview

The Electronic Engineering program integrates electronic information technology with cutting-edge semiconductor applications, aiming to cultivate high-caliber applied talents with global perspectives, strong engineering competence, and innovative capabilities.

Program Focus

This program addresses global trends in the electronics and semiconductor industries, with a focus on electronic system design, testing and verification, intelligent control, and engineering applications. It aims to develop applied professionals with a solid theoretical foundation, strong practical skills, and international competence.

Through systematic study of electronics, analog and digital electronics, and semiconductor technologies, students will build integrated capabilities in system analysis, hardware implementation, testing, diagnostics, system integration, and performance optimization—preparing them for both the future upgrading of the electronic information industry and international technical roles.

Curriculum

The curriculum is internationally oriented, application-driven, and systematically structured around four core modules:—fundamental theory, core technologies, engineering practice, and integrated applications.

Core courses include:

·AC/DC Electrical Principles

·Analog Electronics

·Advanced Engineering Software

·Electrical Networks and Resonance

·Active Electronic Circuits

·Programmable Logic Devices

·Signal Processing and Conditioning

·Engineering Mathematics

·Additional topics cover electronic devices, digital logic, programmable control, and semiconductor applications.

Through an integrated approach combining theoretical study and hands-on training, students will develop a complete knowledge framework—from foundational electronic principles to system development, testing, and engineering implementation.

The program comprises 30 credit units, each with 40 taught hours and 40 self-directed learning hours, typically completed over two academic years.

Program Features

The program emphasizes integrated development of technical expertise, practical skills, and international competence. It balances theoretical instruction with hands-on training, and technical proficiency with career preparation, equipping students for diverse opportunities in electronics, smart hardware, and semiconductor fields, as well as for further academic pursuit.

Career Prospects

Graduates are well-positioned for roles in electronic technology, intelligent manufacturing, automation, industrial electronics, communications, and semiconductor applications, including system development, technical support, testing, engineering implementation, and project coordination. The program also provides a solid foundation for advanced studies and long-term career growth.
