1. Why did you choose the International College of Xiamen University?
First, Xiamen University boasts a profound academic heritage and a beautiful campus. More importantly, the University has established stable partnerships with many overseas institutions, which greatly facilitated my future applications to foreign universities.
Moreover, for someone like me who was not entirely satisfied with my college entrance exam results at the time, the International College offered a brand-new academic pathway. It helped me smoothly transition into a foreign education system, allowing me to adapt in advance to overseas teaching models and academic frameworks while still in China. In particular, the coursework—which includes essay writing, group presentations, and research reports—closely mirrors that of overseas universities. This was the decisive factor in my choice of the International College.
2. What was your biggest takeaway from studying at the College? How would you rate its faculty and curriculum?
My time at the International College of Xiamen University was truly fulfilling. The most striking aspect was the diversity of the curriculum—regardless of which major I might eventually pursue abroad, the College laid a solid foundation for me.
At the same time, the College offered systematic and comprehensive English language courses, creating an immersive language-learning environment. The faculty were also exceptionally dedicated and supportive. When I encountered difficulties during my university applications, Ms. Shang Ying and Mr. Yang Shuai provided me with invaluable help and encouragement, always motivating me to stay committed to my academic goals. I will continue to work hard and live up to their high expectations.
3. After completing your overseas master's degree, why did you decide to pursue a PhD?
My interest in research actually took root during my time at the International College of Xiamen University. Back then, my favourite type of coursework was project-based learning—gathering data, conducting analyses, and writing reports. Although I didn't fully understand what "research" meant at the time, the process of actively seeking answers fascinated me. Later, during my studies abroad, I was fortunate to be exposed to even richer research opportunities.
That overseas experience confirmed for me that I am not only passionate about research but also well-suited to it. Having found a direction I truly love, I felt I should pursue it wholeheartedly and without hesitation. That is why I chose to return to China to continue my doctoral studies.
4. What advice would you offer to current students as they chart their academic paths?
Studying abroad and pursuing academic growth are never achieved overnight—they require early planning and sustained effort over time. I hope my fellow students will map out their academic journeys well in advance, identify the fields they are most passionate about, and consciously accumulate experience and seek out learning opportunities. Every training opportunity encountered at the College is worth taking seriously—they will become the most valuable practical skills you carry with you after you go abroad.
